In the midst of the First World War, Lieutenant Roy (portrayed by Robert Taylor) encounters Mara (played by Vivien Leigh), a talented dancer, on Waterloo Bridge while on vacation. They develop a strong affection for one another and their love grows rapidly. However, their plans for marriage are abruptly disrupted when Roy is summoned back to his regiment. As a result of missing a crucial show, Mara is dismissed from the dance company and finds herself dependent on her loyal friend for survival.
